The district is located in the southern part of Kerala. It shares the border with Thamil Nadu in the east, Kollam in the south,Alappuza in the west and Kottayam and Idukki in the north. The famous pilgrimage center Sabarimala is located in this district. The world of Pathanamthitta derived from the two Malayalam words such as Pathanam means ten families and Thitta means array.
The places were under the ruling of Pandalam reign, which had connections with the Pandya kingdom. In 1820 it is added to the district of Pathanamthitta is formed on November 1, 1982.
